Online people say and post hurtful things to each other

these people are called cyberbullies. 

 

The definition of a cyberbully is:

the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature 

A lot of social media platforms are not regulated meaning that people are free to share their opinions even if it might upset someone as it is sort of like a protective layer making it easier for someone to say hurtful thing as they might not consider the consequences and they also cant see the effect it has on that person.

Laws:

Hate Crime: 

a crime motivated by racial, sexual, or other prejudice, typically one involving violence.

Some police forces also record hate incidents based on other personal characteristics such as age.in Greater Manchester Police now recognises alternative subculture hate incidents based on someone’s appearance and include goths, emo’s, punks and other similar groups. This means they will also record any such incidents as a hate crime

Libel:

a published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation;a written defamation.

this false statement could be expressed through social media

 

Defamation:

Under common law, to constitute defamation, a claim must generally be false and must have been made to someone other than the person defamed. Some common law jurisdictions also distinguish between spoken defamation, called slander, and defamation in other media such as printed words or images, called libel.

The Statement must have directly caused harm or injury to the victim.
